Synopsis: Isabel is uncomfortable when she goes to school, she has to learn English to communicate with her classmates and teachers! It is hard to create friendships when using English, it reminds Isabel of stormy blues and blizzard whites. Isabel prefers the pinks, yellows and purples of Spanish. But Isabel discovers that friendships are stronger than language barriers when there is more than one way to communicate. Isabel and Her Colores Go to School aims to acknowledge the experiences of children that come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The many talents of kids like Isabel can be unfolded when educators foster welcoming environments that recognize the strengths and experiences of all students.


Anti-Bias elements:

  • Positive Depictions of Relationship building among students of different backgrounds: The author and illustrator successfully portray the many ways in which ESL students communicate with their peers. This is achieved by portraying a character with creative skills and exploits them in the classroom.

  • Encourage Friendship and Communication: This book encourages students to try other ways to communicate with their Non-English speaking peers. These students have are often casted aside because they simply "don't understand" but there are many other ways to bond with others!

  • Relevant for Young Readers: Bilingual, monolingual, multilingual, ESL students and simply anyone who recognizes the linguistic experiences of young students from diverse backgrounds will enjoy this book. The illustrations help readers relate colors with the emotions of the first day of school, especially as an English learner!
