Christina Furnival created a short story about how children can set boundaries. The story takes place at school where a young girl is experiencing being bullied. The little girl is upset that her friend is not being kind to her. She talks to her parents and teacher about the situation and learns to set boundaries. She realizes the importance of her voice just as much as the importance of her actions. With that, she voiced her boundaries to her unkind friend, while also giving her friend space to make improvements.
Anti-Bias Elements:
The story depicts people of color, with different characteristics and hairstyles. The social justice in the story is presented as an everyday collaborative act with the child of the book asking for help from her trusted adults and therefore, taking what she learned to protect and teach her other classmates. The relationship between people in this story is socially acceptable. The story does illustrate bad behavior, but as you read on there are illustrations that introduce techniques on how to set boundaries. The book is age-appropriate, illustrating elementary school children confronting conflict. The illustrations are vibrant and the story is consistent and does not go off-topic.
The author is a mental health therapist who wants to empower children with her storytelling. C. Furnival adds conversation starters and questions for parents to introduce the topic of boundaries to their children. This book would be a great story to read to a child of any age, to kick-start their behavior towards others.
